What  is the Bowen Technique?

The Bowen technique is a gentle, non-manipulating holistic therapy that has been  effective in helping a variety of conditions such as: back, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica, knee, ankle and foot problems, pelvis  misalignment, digestive problems, IBS, migraines, headaches, menstrual and  hormonal irregularities, such as menopausal symptoms, PMT, fertility problems, respiratory problems, RSI, carpel tunnel syndrome, sport and accident injuries and stress . Bowen is an effective treatment for any age range, from birth – 100 years and can be carried out safely on pregnant women.

How does it work?

The  gentle moves are performed over muscles, tendons, joints and connective tissue, or fascia, which allows the brain to send messages to the body to make the  necessary adjustments.
The muscle memory is altered by the body to allow the changes to occur. This allows the body to make the adjustments in its own  time, normally focusing on the area of greatest concern first  and will continue to work for up to 5-10 days after the session. The  Bowen Technique can focus on particular areas of concern,  as well as have a holistic effect on the whole body, including emotions, energy levels, relaxation and sleep.

What are its origins?

Bowen was first developed in Geelong, Australia by Thomas Bowen (1916 to 1982).Thomas had an interest in the human muscular structure and he intuitively began working with this technique discovering that certain moves on the body helped recovery from many conditions. It is believed that Thomas Bowen treated some 13,000 patients every year with amazing results.

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING INVOLVE?

The Bowen technique instructors offer a range of training modules from beginners to Master classes for those who wish further to advance their skills. Many have developed their own accredited specialist training workshops to support continuous professional development (CPD). CPD is a critical element for all Bowen therapists and some of these courses are open to the wider Bowen community including those who may have gained their qualification through an accredited non-Bowtech programme.
